Il découvrit dès 1715 le pendule compensateur par assemblage de métaux inégalement dilatables ; il inventa deux types d'échappements, exécuta pour l'observatoire de Greenwich un cercle mural et perfectionna l'instrument des passages. Ses grands secteurs eurent également de la réputation, et c'est avec l'un d'eux que Bradley avait découvert l'aberration de la lumière.</p>

<p><a title="" name="_ftn2" href="file://persls.stockage.univ-lorraine.fr/muller62/BDL/Transcriptions%20PVS%20-%20JMFeurtet/PV-BDL%201795-1805/258%203e%20registre.doc#_ftnref2">[2]</a> Nicolas-Maurice Chompré (1750-1825), d'abord employé au bureau des Mines et de l'Agriculture du ministre d'Etat Bertin, fut employé comme géomètre du bureau du Cadastre en 1794, nommé chef de bureau au ministère des Relations extérieures puis consul à Malaga, d'où il fut rappelé en 1800 après avoir froissé les intérêts du gouvernement espagnol. Il avait traduit des ouvrages de mathématiques et d'astronomie de l'italien, comme le <em>Traité de trigonométrie </em>de Cagnoli.</p>
